Children's Books

Q: Can you recommend some exciting, educational cookbooks for children? I'd like to give one as a birthday gift.

Lynne: A few come to mind. Marion Cunningham, a wonderful cooking teacher, did a book on cooking with children. I don't recall how detailed she gets, but Marion is the kind of teacher who would explain the basics of cooking. There's a book on cooking for children from the "dummies" series of books, if that title wouldn't be offensive as a gift. Then Alice Waters, of Chez Panisse restaurant fame, has a daughter named Fanny and they did a book about food geared to children. It's wonderful to read and the recipes are simple. Another idea might be to give a cooking class as a gift - some cooking schools offer great classes for kids.
