Cloaca
March 16, 2002

Cloaca, conceived by Belgian artist Wim Delvoye as a close duplication of the functions of the human digestive system, was built in collaboration with scientists at the University of Antwerp from laboratory glassware, plastic tubing, computer monitors, and electric pumps. Twice a day Cloaca is fed nutritious meals that it chews, swallows, digests, and eliminates. Currently installed at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City, the exhibit runs until April 28, 2002.
