Bread Bakers Guild Team USA 2002 Members of the Bread Bakers Guild Team USA 2002 hope to repeat The Guild's stunning 1999 victory when Team USA captured first place, beating the French at the prestigious Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie (the World Cup of Baking). The French are expected to mount a formidable challenge to recapture the cup at the next Coupe du Monde to be held in Paris April 21-23, 2002. Team USA is organized and led by the Bread Bakers Guild of America, comprised of more than 1,300 artisan bread bakers nationwide. Considered the Olympics of baking, the intense competition features bread baking teams from 12 countries vying to outdo each other in three categories: Baguette and Specialty Breads, Viennoiserie, and Artistic Design. Teams have only eight hours to create the required 50 baguettes, 36 specialty breads, 90 pastries and the regulation one-meter-by-one-meter bread sculpture. Contestants must meet exact standards set by a panel of international judges who consider weight, density, appearance, taste, execution and originality in their decision process.
