Classic Cookbooks Edited by Judith Jones
April 8, 2006

She discovered Julia Child 40-some years ago, her influence changed the American cookbook forever, and her authors became a "who's who of food." She is Judith Jones, often called the cookbook editor's editor.

In her long and illustrious career at publisher Alfred A. Knopf, Judith has edited not only major works in cooking but great classics in literature as well, including The Diary of Anne Frank and translations of French writers Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre.

An author in her own right, Judith wrote three cookbooks with her late husband Evan Jones: The Book of Bread; Knead It, Punch It, Bake It! and The L.L. Bean Book of New England Cookery. In May 2006 she will receive the James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award

Some of the classic cookbook titles edited by Judith include: Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child, Louisette Bertholle and Simone Beck; The Classic Italian Cook Book and Italian Cooking by Marcella Hazan, An Invitation to Indian Cooking by Madhur Jaffrey, The Book of Latin American Food by Elizabeth Ortiz, At Home with Japanese Cooking by Elizabeth Andoh, The Key to Chinese Cooking by Irene Kuo, and A Book of Middle Eastern Food by Claudia Roden.
