Tortilla Chips Cook's Illustrated magazine is noted for a number of excellent features, one being their comprehensive evaluations of food and cooking equipment. In a recent judging of tortilla chips, 27 members of the staff tasted the most popular brands as well as a few premium-priced specialty chips. They considered flavor, texture, durability (important for nachos!), and size. The top three picks were: Doritos Toasted Corn Tortilla Chips: Fresh toasted-corn flavor, crisp texture, and affinity for dipping won these chips the top spot. Doritos were also tops in the nacho tasting. Available in Western states, except California. Miguel's Stowe Away White Corn Tortilla Chips: Delicately crisp in spite of being thick, the subtly flavored Miguel's won second place. And they held their crispness when covered with cheese in the nachos test. Newman's Own Organics Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips: Home-fried, simple, corny, and clean describes the chip that took third place. While these were the thinnest chips tested, judges found them the perfect size for dipping. Packages were found to have a higher-than-average number of broken chips, however. Look for the complete evaluation in the July/August 2002 issue of Cook's Illustrated. Back to Tastings | Share Tastings opinions in Food Talk |
