The Vasa Museum
May 4, 2002

Listen to this feature (RealAudio; how to listen)

What food takes its name from one of the most embarrassing events in Sweden's naval history? It's the Wasa brand rye cracker—the one with the picture of a ship on the box label.

The Vasa was a war ship built by the Swedish navy in the early 1600s with the aim of making it the most powerful fighting ship in the world. But to the horror of spectators watching from the beach, the unfortunate vessel met up with disaster only a few minutes into its maiden voyage.

The story of the catastrophe is told at Stockholm's Vasa Museum. Visit the Web site to learn more about the ship, the museum, and its exhibits.
