This month I'd like to share with your family a Sunday supper from my Italian family. Both sets of my grandparents immigrated from Italy to America at the beginning of the century. My mother's mother was a Tuscan sharecropper's daughter and a wonderful cook.
Perhaps it's my heritage that enticed me into years of roaming Italy, learning from farmhouse cooks. But whatever the reason, Italian country food is practically part of my genetic structure. Which is why I wanted to launch our Sunday Suppers series with this menu. It's the best kind of farmhouse feasting - easy cooking that the whole family can get in on, luscious to eating for everyone to share, and it calls for seasonal foods straight from the countryside.
If at all possible, do use organic ingredients... I think they make a big difference ecologically, and in the quality of what we eat.
