Dishwashers

June 3, 2000

Before shopping for a dishwasher, Deb Krasner says to decide what features are most important to you. If "quiet" is foremost, plan to spend at least $800. If it's not so important, you can get by for much less. There are three basic levels of dishwashers, priced according to features:

Low-end: American-made, loud, plastic-lined, standard white front, priced about $300.

Midrange: Some models with stainless-steel front and interior, more wash options, quieter, priced $400-$800.

High-end: European brands, high energy- and water efficiency, the quietest, priced $800-$2,000.

Deb's picks in each level are:

High-end: European brands Osco, Bosch, or Miele (which offers a model with a third rack).

Midrange: Go for KitchenAid.

Low-end: Deb doesn't recommend a low-end model because they don't last, although they would be fine if you'll be living in the house for a short time.
