Garlic Gear

June 24, 2000

If the kitchen gods haven't blessed you with the ability to perfectly mince garlic using a knife and at lightening speed, not to worry. There's garlic gizmos galore to aid slicing, dicing, mincing and pressing - and one that will remove the tell-tale odor from your fingers when you're done. Look for these favorites of gadget queen Dorie Greenspan, author of a monthly column on kitchen gear for Bon Appétit magazine:

Garlic Presses: Oxo Good Grips and Pedrini make reliable self-cleaning presses. Expect to pay about $15.

Garlic Slicer: This tool cuts garlic as thin as you please and costs about $8.

Odor Steeler: There's no need to wear the evidence of a garlic-laden repast on your hands for days. Rub this stainless steel gadget against your fingers while they're under running water and the tell-tale odor will be gone in a flash. Priced at about $10.
