Cava
March 9, 2002

Listen to this feature (How to listen)

Cava, meaning "cellar" in Spanish, is a very reasonably priced wine made like champagne but comes strictly from Spain. Joshua Wesson of Best Cellars says you get what you pay for with Cava, but suggests three to try:

Segura Viudas Aria: made by a small house near Barcelona, this wine can often be found in supermarkets and is good with a bowl of popcorn or caviar. It's the least expensive of the three.

Mont Sarra: more complex and comes with a fantastic label designed by art students.

Juve y Camp Grand Reserva: Josh says this wine, which is aged for 30 months rivals champagne.
