Holiday Champagne Picks
December 13, 1997

Mary Ewing-Mulligan and Ed McCarthy, authors of The Wine Buying Companion for Dummies, suggest the following champagnes and sparkling wines for holiday celebrations:

As an apéritif: choose a lighter style from houses such as Tattinger and Laurent-Perrier or a Blanc de Blancs made from 100% chardonnay grapes.

To serve with a meal: look for a full style champagne made with more black grapes. Choices might include Bollinger, Veuve Clicquot, and Krug.

For a very special gift: you won’t go wrong with a Billecart Salmon Blanc de Blancs at approximately $45-$55; a Veuve Clicquot 1989 Vintage at about $45; or Moët & Chandon Cuvée Dom Pérignon for about $80.
