Chenin Blanc:
A Delicious White That's Still a Bargain
July 1, 2000

Wine maverick Josh Wesson, the genius behind Best Cellars wine shops, thinks that Chenin Blanc is one of the world's most versatile - and underrated - wine grape varieties. Grown all over the world, Chenin Blanc grapes produce a delicious white wine tasting of red apples, cantaloupe, peaches, apricots, and a touch of citrus. Some very good sipping can be had for about $6 a bottle. Josh says always buy the youngest Chenin Blanc available and says give these a try, all from the 1998 vintage:

  • Hogue Cellars: Chenin Blanc from Washington State
  • KWV Steen from South Africa: Chenin Blanc is the most widely planted grape in South Africa, where it is called "Steen." A bargain winner at $6 a bottle!
  • Dry Creek from Sonoma, California
  • Marc Bredif Vouvray: a very reliable, slightly off-sweet wine from France's Loire Valley.
