Joshua Wesson on Port
December 18, 1999

Listen to this feature (RealAudio 3.0; how to listen)

Among the fortified red wines, port is considered by many to be the world's greatest. Named for the Portuguese city of Oporto, authentic Portuguese port is labeled "Porto" to distinguish it from "Ports" produced by other countries. Many styles of port exist but two major ones are tawny and ruby. Josh has some favorites in the $10-and-under range.

Tawny Port: Barrel-aged before bottling, Josh prefers these brownish red ports because "they are known commodities of deliciousness."

Ruby Port: Aged in the bottle, Ruby ports are constantly changing.

Joshua's Favorite Tawny Ports Not from Portugal
Penfold's Tawny Port: This Australian port has a chocolatey flavor and sells for around $8 to $9 a bottle.

KWV Tawny Port: More mocha and nutty flavored than Penfold's, this is a great value from South Africa and priced at $6 to $7 a bottle.

Andrew Quady: This maker of dessert wines also produces a tawny port called Starboard. With toffee and caramel flavors, it is the most complex of the three. Josh recently had it with a frozen Snickers bar and declared it "a divine food and wine match."
