Low-Alcohol Wines

When shopping for low-alcohol and non-alcohol wines, Joshua Wesson, of Best Cellars says to look for a sparkling variety like Ariel because the bubbles will help mask the hollow taste of these wines. If you're going to try a non-sparkling wine, choose reds over whites for more body. The general trick is to look for wines from cool climate areas like northern France or Germany. For low-alcohol whites, Josh likes these:

France: Michel Bregeon Muscadet, a hand-harvested, estate-bottled white with 9-10 percent alcohol and priced at around $11 a bottle.

Germany: Irsch-Ockfener Riesling has the lowest amount of sweetness and is bargain-priced at $6 to $7 a bottle.
