2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Napa Valley ($125)
Price puts this blockbuster in the investment category, but David calls it "miraculous wine, a staggering demonstration of what a master winemaker can achieve." Tastes of vanilla, earth, ripe melon, and raisins come to mind in a Cabernet that's at once elegant, perfectly balanced, and harmonious. Tuck it away in the cellar for 10-20 years.
2000 Huichica Hills Chardonnay ($50)
Another superbly balanced wine that David says is "one of the most perfectly crafted, and exotically scented, Napa Valley Chardonnays I have ever tasted." The nose is a combination of flowers, jasmine, perfume, and mandarin orange with the occasional hint of toast and spice. This Chardonnay is quite dry and big in the mouth, with good acid and a long finish.
2000 Chardonnay Reserve, Napa Valley ($38)
Watch for this Chardonnay to be on the market in late 2003. The nose is a sparkling combination of subtle tropical fruit, toast, spice, and vanilla. In contrast to most Napa Valley Chardonnays having too much of everything, this one combines complexity with a lighter yet still lively feel. Track some down and drink right away.
2000 Sauvignon Blanc, Stag's Leap District ($23)
This discovery has David excited. Crisp and vivid, with notes of capsicum and grapefruit, he says it comes close to the Loire-like Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand and South Africa.
