South African Wine Bargains
by Joshua Wesson
February 20, 1999

Wine authority Joshua Wesson of Best Cellars says the great bargain wines to look for now come from South Africa, a country that's been making wine for 300 years. The lifting of apartheid and the embargo on South African goods has brought a brand new world of wine to most of us, including Pinotage, a wonderfully berry-like grape unique to South Africa. Joshua's favorite, Beyerskloof Pinotage, has lots of blueberry/raspberry flavors and comes from a winemaker he says looks exactly like Frank Zappa!

South Africa also makes some of the world's best Sauvignon Blanc. Joshua says try the Saxenberg Sauvignon Blanc. It's hand-harvested from old vines and at about $10 a bottle he says there's nothing better.
