What exactly is a Gastrosexual? Our working definition is this: one who use their culinary skills to impress their friends and potential love interests. We're looking for the best movers and shakers in the kitchen, the Gastrosexuals of our modern era. Strut your culinary stuff, and each month, we'll pick the best to have on the show.
Author Joyce Carol Oates wrote, "If food is poetry, is not poetry also food?" Those of us here at The Splendid Table agree, and we have therefore sought to bring great poetry to the program as part of the Poetry Radio Project, a collaboration between the Poetry Foundation and American Public Media that crosses several of the radio programs produced by American Public Media. The project is an effort to use poetry to inform and enrich our lives. We're collecting the poetry we feature on The Splendid Table here, including Lynne Rosetto Kasper's conversations with poets Elizabeth Alexander, Jane Hirshfield and more.
Locavore Nation is a year-long effort to see what it takes to live by a regionally based diet.
Join us as 15 individuals from around the country share their experiences as they try to get 80 percent of their food from local, organic, seasonal sources and then incorporate it into tasty, healthy meals. Can they do it? Check back often as their stories unfold—and offer your comments on their actions along the way. Or follow along on-air as our participants check in periodically with Lynne.
It's 2 hours of live culinary triage on the day you need it most—Thanksgiving. This is the day even non-cooks get in the kitchen. We'll be here bright and early with open lines for your questions—anything goes! And I'll be joined by a few surprise guests includiing Isaac Mizrahi, Christopher Kimball and Nora Ephron. Don't miss it.
More than 15,000 people completed our survey, an extraordinary number and a clear indication that the issue of sustainability is being taken seriously. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to take the survey. The results were incredible to see and will help up advance this cause nationally.
Because we suspect that The Splendid Table's listeners are Foodinistas of the first order—the kind of people who start plotting dinner while eating breakfast—we went to you for some information. We're hoped to catch a glimpse into the collective mind of our wonderful, quirky and imaginative audience to share with each other and show to the world.
The people have spoken, and without further ado we proudly present the results.
