Montreal, Canada: Babka and Bagels from Montreal's Neighborhood Jewish Eateries
March 4, 2006
Listen to this feature (How to listen)
It took a trip to Montreal for the Sterns to find the ultimate chocolate babka and the bagels of their dreams. Here's where they found them:
Chocolate Babka
Cheskie Heimishe Bakery
359 Bernard Street West
Montreal
514-271-2253
Ultra-thin layers of dough streaked with "profound" chocolate, these are a sweet that teeters on the edge of bread and cake.
Bagels
Fairmount Bagel
74 Fairmount Avenue West
514-272-0667
Smaller and sweeter than ordinary bagels, these are baked in wood-fired ovens.
Smoked meats are another wonderful specialty of the city's Jewish eateries. Montreal's version of brisket includes curing the meat for at least a week and smoking it for hours, followed by several hours in a spice-loaded steam box. The result is meat so tender and fragile it requires hand slicing.
Schwartz's
3895 St.-Laurent Blvd.
