Ben's Chili Bowl and Florida Avenue Grill

Ben's Chili Bowl, a lunch counter and neighborhood hangout that's been on U Street since 1958, is the home of the "half smoke." Unique to D.C., these griddle-cooked sausages are served on a bun and topped with Ben's chili. Lots of celebrities stop by, too, which might be part of the reason Ben's has such an interesting history.
The Sterns also recommend the Florida Avenue Grill, also located in Northwest Washington, for great soul food and especially good breakfasts, all at reasonable prices.
