Cypress Grill
February 19, 2005
When the herring are running in the Roanoke River, Jane and Michael Stern's thoughts turn to Cypress Grill in Jamesville, North Carolina. It's a wonderful tradition every spring when the herring shacks sprout up on the banks of the river. At The Cypress Grill, the herring is served "cremated" or "sunnyside up." Cremated is very well done - slashed almost to the bone then breaded and deep-fried. Sunnyside up is very different - it's barely cooked and very "fishy." It's real seasonal food so they're open only January to April. Leave room for the chocolate pie!
