Gering, NE: Gering Bakery
August , 2007
Listen to this feature (How to listen)
While passing through the town of Gering, a small sign in the window of the Gering Bakery caught Jane's eye. The Sterns being the Sterns, they had to stop and investigate.
Old-fashioned homemade cookies, donuts, cream pies and whipped cream cakes filled the pastry case, but it was the cabbage burger that caught their attention. The savory mix of cabbage, ground meat and spices on a bun is a regional specialty apparently found only in Nebraska. Also called Bierok and Runza (a now trademarked corporate name), the sandwich was brought to the area by Volga Germans who settled in the Great Plains over a century ago.
Jane says don't pass up the soft pretzel frosted with peanut butter icing.
