Harry Caray's Chicago
August 2, 2003

Listen to this feature (How to listen)

Harry Caray's Chicago (there are outposts in Rosemont and Midway Airport) was founded by the late hall-of-fame announcer and "voice of the Chicago Cubs." It's not the typical sports bar and restaurant, but an Italian steakhouse located in an old building by the river that used to house a varnish distribution plant, along with a fourth-floor hideout for the 1930's mobster, Frank Nitti.

The food is regional and the atmosphere funky. A large plastic replica of a cow with holes in it pays tribute to Harry, who coined the expression "Holy Cow!" The famous homemade potato chips served at the bar (it's 60' 6", the exact distance from the pitcher's mound to home plate) are as good as they get, and the Chicken Vesuvio and Shrimp De Jonghe are not to be missed.
