Listen to this feature (How to listen)
When the end-of-the-year holidays roll around and you have a big gathering of family to feed but don't want to cook, Jane and Michael say the answer is to find a really good buffet-style restaurant where everyone can eat as much or as little as they want of whatever they want.
How to recognize a good buffet? The Sterns say go for the one-of-a-kind, local "mom and pop" place then step inside and take a quick look at the offerings in the buffet line. Is the bread homemade? Chances are good everything will be delicious. That's what you'll find at Quinet's Court. The Sterns claim this buffet is one of the best they've encountered in a long time.
The variety of food offered is mind-boggling: baby back ribs; ham loaf; kielbasa; chicken casserole; 24 different vegetables, including butter beans, carrots and scalloped potatoes; and wonderful homemade breads, rolls and sticky buns. You are invited to eat as much as you want, but heed the sign posted at the beginning of the buffet line warning that a $1.00 surcharge will be added to your bill if you waste food.
Quinet's is a huge storefront restaurant but inside it's warm and friendly. Wall are covered with pictures of past guests, including Jack Dempsey in the 1940's, old black-and-white photos depicting town history, and local news clippings.
