Red Hen Bakery

Listen to this feature (RealAudio; how to listen)
Do you love crusty, handcrafted bread with real flavor? If so, visit the Red Hen Bakery on Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. It's yeast-leavened heaven at this small shop offering country peasant breads, rugged sourdoughs, circular loaves topped with caramelized onions, wreath-shaped loaves with olive tapenade, walnut/currant batons, and a pumpkin/sweet corn/multi-grain loaf that makes toast to die for. On weekends you'll see bittersweet chocolate chunk and sweet potato pecan breads, either of which could be breakfast. The Red Hen offers an array of big muffins too. Look for banana-date, cranberry-wheat, lemon-poppyseed and cock-a-doodle carrot.
