New Jersey has no shortage of great diners and the Sterns say one of the best is the Short Stop Diner at Exit 148 off the Garden State Parkway. Jane says it's a hash house with panache, the original fast food. The house special is eggs in a skillet so expect your order to arrive in the pan in which it was cooked.
The Short Stop is small. There are no tables, there's room for only 15 at the counter, and there's a 15-minute limit on parking. A sign in the parking lot clearly states their terms: "Eat it and beat it."Short Stop Diner
