Chicken and Waffles in Harlem
April 2, 2005
If you haven't been to Harlem in a while, or never visited, now's the time. It's one of the hottest real estate markets in the city. Change is afoot, crime is way down, there are lots of beautiful turn-of-the-century buildings, and it seems that new construction and renovations are taking place on virtually every block.
The Harlem classic, Chicken and Waffles, is another reason to visit. It's three meals rolled into one: fried chicken, served over a homemade waffle, with butter and real maple syrup! The dish originated back in the 1930's at the now defunct Wells' Famous Chicken and Waffles.
Mike Colamecco, host of "Colameco's Food Show" on New York's PBS Channel 13, says the best version these days is at Amy Ruth's, where Chef Carl Redding presides. Besides the Chicken and Waffles, try the excellent Chicken and Dumplings, Braised Short Ribs, Smothered Steak with Green Peppers and Onions, and Fried Catfish and Whiting Combo. And save room for some Peach Cobbler, Bread Pudding, Red Velvet Cake or Sweet Potato Pie.
