Nora - America’s First
Certified Organic Restaurant

October 1, 1999

Nora, the Washington, D.C., restaurant known for being one of the best places to eat in the nation’s capital, has become the first restaurant in the country to be certified organic by Oregon Tilth, a not-for-profit organization involved with international research and education programs in sustainable agriculture. To win the designation, the restaurant was required to prove that 95 percent or more of all ingredients used from fruits, vegetables, and meats to coffee, chocolate, salt, and sugar - come from producers who also have been certified organic. For owner Nora Pouillon, the designation is the ultimate recognition of her dedication to sustainable agricultural practices that prohibit the use of pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, and growth-promoting hormones.
