Breakfast in Manhattan
November 5, 2005

Mike Colameco, our go-to guy in New York, says breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day when you're in the Big Apple. Give these a try.

Barney Greengrass
541 Amsterdam Avenue (between 86th and 87th)
212-724-4707

A great specialty fish delicatessen located in the heart of Manhattan's upper west side. Measure all others against their smoked salmon, whitefish, whitefish salad, sturgeon, sable, and sublime chopped liver. All are offered with bagels from nearby H & H, as well as great Bialy's, or with scrambled eggs. Don't skip the borscht.

Michael's
24 West 55th Street
212-767-0555

A classic New York power breakfast. The show starts early, so get there by 8:00 a.m. for ringside seats. For guys with hundred-dollar haircuts and three-thousand-dollar suits, and Manhattan's spitfire businesswomen dressed to the nines, the workday doesn't start early enough. For them, this is their first meeting of the day, the first client to meet and break bread with, the first deal to be done. The place buzzes with intensity and the food, of course, is very good.

Norma's
The Parker Meridien Hotel
118 West 57th Street
212-708-7435

This is the wackiest brunch spot I know. They do brunch seven days a week right into the early afternoon. And trust me, you've never seen food like this before. Five-inch high Chocolate French Toast (chocolate brioche, of course) with a liquid chocolate center; fruit-studded waffles with glazed strawberry Hollandaise; duck confit hash; and, of course, the $1,000 sevruga caviar and lobster omelet.

Petrossian Café
911 7th Avenue (between 57th and 58th )
212-245-4204

One of my all-time favorites, I eat here a lot with my family. Think small, elegant, refined, and very Parisian. For some of the best baked goods you'll ever have, try their superb croissant, pan au chocolate, Madeleine's, or muffins. Or the silky rich Greek yogurt served with homemade granola and buckwheat honey, superb French smoked salmon, osetra caviar with blinis, or homemade waffles with ice cream and fresh fruit.
