Podvorye and Café Pushkin
June 7, 2003
Listen to this feature (How to listen)
At Podvorye, travel writer Anya Von Bremzen says venture beyond the menu offered to foreigners like Prince Charles and Jacques Chirac and you'll find a notable restaurant. The fresh mulberry and cornelian cherry juices are from owner Sergei Gutsai's Crimean estate. The food ranges from dacha fare like porcini pickled with black currant leaves and potato pancakes with pork cracklings, to tavern classics such as the sturgeon solianka soup with olives and pickles.
The exterior resembles a Russian izba, or wooden cottage. Inside, a stuffed bear greets arriving guests who will be served by waiters in folk costumes.
