Street Food
March 14, 2003
Listen to this feature (How to listen)
When Jane and Michael Stern decided to take off in search of the best street food in Rome, they knew the city's hellish traffic would require abandoning a car in favor of sturdy shoes. A week spent on foot navigating bumpy cobblestones and dodging Vespas netted some memorable finds.
Pasticceria Il Boccione
Via del Portico d'Ottavia 1
Tel: 06-687-8637
Known to the Sterns as the "Burnt Place," everything at this bakery is overcooked, but in a nice way. The hard Honey Almond Cookies are just right for dunking in the rich Italian coffee, and the scorched top of the ricotta cheesecake is reminiscent of crème brûlée.
Antico Forno del Ghetto
Piazza Costaguti 30-31
Tel: 06-688-03012
The simple pizza is sold by weight at this Jewish Quarter bakery.
Zi Fenizia
Via Santa Maria del Pianto 65
Tel: 06-689-6976
Zi Fenizia is located around the corner from Antico Forno del Ghetto, this is the place for those who want their pizza kosher and loaded with toppings: fresh grape tomatoes, artichoke leaves, zucchini shreds, onion slices, anchovies, and endive ... but no cheese.
