New York's Wine Bars
June 4, 2005
Former chef Mike Colamecco covers the New York City food scene on his PBS series, "Colamecco's Food Show." He's also our go-to guy for advice on good eats at bargain prices in the Big Apple. He says you'll find interesting, reasonably priced menus, designed to be paired with wines from all over the planet, at the city's wine bars. Here are a few of Mike's picks:
Etats Unis
247 East 81st Street
212-517-8826
Right across the street from its sister restaurant on East 87th, this small room features a great selection of mostly French wines by the glass, and solid food to pair with it. This is a good choice if you're uptown visiting the upper East Side art museums like the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art of 5th Avenue, or window shopping upper Madison Avenue.
Inoteca
98 Rivington Street
212-614-0473
Located downtown in that hot new lower east side restaurant neighborhood, Inoteca features Italian foods, with a menu divided into several sections. Assorted delicious antipasti, pane (sandwiches), fritti (fried things), and the larger piatti (main course portions of mostly pasta) are paired with a great international wine list very strong on hard-to-find Italian regional varietals.
Morrell Restaurant
900 Broadway at 20th Street
212-253-0900
Located right in the heart of Rockefeller Center, with outdoor seating to boot, this is a great place for casual food and wine by the glass or a more serious meal with some superb, hard-to-find wines by the glass. You could call it a "destination" wine bar where you can sample rare vintage Champagnes, top-flight Burgundies, Grand Cru Bordeauxs, Barolos, Super Tuscans, and Sauternes. The menu is serious, featuring fresh oysters, onion tarts, assorted charcuterie and oxtail consommé, followed by great pastas, duck confit, dry-aged steaks, diver scallops or braised short ribs.
