Early January may seem an inauspicious time to begin an "eat local" project in Southwest Michigan. As if to underscore that point, nearly a foot of snow fell in Kalamazoo on January 3; however, my husband (Mac), daughter (Anna, age 11) and I are ready for the challenge!
Since moving here six years ago, we've become deeply rooted in this area. Kalamazoo is a college town with vibrant arts and cultural offerings, and is emerging as a nationally-known education community. We especially appreciate the Kalamazoo Promise, a unique college scholarship program for public high school graduates.
Food and food-related issues are among my passions. In addition to this blog, I'm serving on the board of a local food pantry network, working to become a Master Gardener volunteer, and helping to promote a new Foodie Book Club started by a local independent bookseller.
Farmers, nutritionists, retailers, professors and many others in our community are helping us in our efforts to eat locally. Connections are being made. Stories are being told. I look forward to sharing all of this, and more, on Locavore Nation.
