Stroud, OK: Rock Café
April 7, 2007
Listen to this feature (How to listen)
The Rock Café in Stroud was built in 1939 out of rocks removed during construction of the last stretch of the renowned Route 66. Since then, it's been remodeled many times, but the legendary hamburgers made by current proprietor Dawn Welch are still sizzled on the old original grill.
The menu features a wide variety of dishes, from stir-fries to Mexican, beignets to apple streusel crepes, and a short bowl of beans with cornbread on the side. But it's the fabulous chicken fried steak that Dawn makes from a pork cutlet rather than the traditional beef that's a must have. The thick and juicy meat is fall-apart tender and sheathed in a luxuriously brittle crust.
Be sure to check out the great collection of photos of the The Rock Café that Jane and Michael have posted on their Roadfood Web site; http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=3536
